PM Modi Refers Hyderabad As 'Bhagyanagar', Will The Name of City Change?

Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday sparked controversy as he referred to Hyderabad as Bhagyanagar during his address to the masses across the country.

During the Bharatiya Janata party's (BJP) national executive meeting here, PM Modi said that it was in Bhagyanagar that Sardar Patel, the freedom fighter icon, had coined the term "Ek Bharat".

''By ending appeasement, we have adopted the path of fulfillment. We have only one ideology - Nation First. We have only one program - Nation First,'' he added.

As the Prime Minister referred to the Hyderabad, several media reports including people are speculating that soon Hyderabad will be renamed.

Meanwhile, Speaking to reporters after the PM's address, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said," PM Modi said that Hyderabad is Bhagyanagar which is a sign for all of us. Sardar Patel kept the foundation of a unified India and now it's BJP's responsibility to carry it further."

"When the BJP comes into power in the state, the chief minister will decide this along with the cabinet colleagues," Union Minister Piyush Goyal said when a question regarding the renaming of Hyderbad city was asked.

Notably, BJP leaders including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have been demanding to rename Hyderabad Bhagyanagar for a long.

Last year during the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) polls, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister had said, ''Often people ask me if Hyderabad can be renamed Bhagyanagar. I tell them why not."

As per reports, the name 'Bhagyanagar' comes from the legend of 'Bhagmati' -- a woman dancer with whom Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, a ruler of Hyderabad in the 16th century, fell in love.

The reports claimed that Hyderabad was first known as Bhagyanagar after Bhagmati but after getting married to Shah she reportedly converted to Islam and took the name of Hyder Mahal, and it is believed that that is where the city's present name comes from.

However, the existence of Bhagmati itself is debated among historians of Hyderabad, the city was not named after her.
